"Invalid code"? Why your authenticator code isn't working
You open your authenticator, type the 6 digits, and the site says "invalid code." Frustrating — but almost always fixable in under a minute. Here's what's really going on.
The number one cause: your clock is off
TOTP codes are built from the current time, rounded to a 30-second window. Your app and the server have to agree on what time it is. If your phone's clock has drifted by even a minute, every code you enter will look wrong to the server.
The fix: set your phone's date and time to automatic / network time. That resyncs the clock and the codes start matching again.
Other things to check
- You typed it too late. Codes expire every 30 seconds. If the timer was almost up, wait for a fresh code and enter it promptly.
- Wrong account. If you have several entries, make sure you're reading the code for the right service — the labels look similar.
- Spaces or a stray digit. Enter exactly the 6 digits shown, no spaces.
- You reset 2FA and kept the old entry. If you re-enabled 2FA, the old secret is dead. Delete the old entry and scan the new QR code.
Still locked out?
If nothing works, fall back to a backup code, or follow your service's account recovery process. Then re-add the account cleanly.
