Etsy 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App

Your Etsy account holds your orders, your payment details and, if you sell, your shop. Etsy calls the feature 2 factor authentication (2FA) and lets you get verification codes from an authenticator app, which it calls the more secure option, so Authenticator App - Novaz can supply your codes.

Your Etsy account stores addresses, order history, and sometimes saved cards, which makes it a common target. Besides an authenticator app, Etsy also offers SMS text codes and phone-call codes. An authenticator app (TOTP) is usually the best balance of security and convenience — and it's safer than SMS codes, which can be intercepted through SIM-swap attacks.

Part 1: Turn on 2FA in Etsy

    Open your Security settings

    On Etsy.com, select your profile icon and choose "Account settings". Go to "Security".

    Choose Turn 2FA on

    Under "2 factor authentication (2FA)", choose "Turn 2FA on".

    Pick Authenticator App

    Choose "Authenticator App" from the dropdown menu and select "Continue". Etsy then reminds you to download an authenticator app; select "Continue" again, and Etsy shows a QR code.

Part 2: Add Etsy to Authenticator App - Novaz

    Scan the QR code with Authenticator App - Novaz

    Open Authenticator App - Novaz, tap the + button and scan the QR code on Etsy. Check that the account name reads Etsy, then tap "Save".

    Authenticator App - Novaz now shows a verification code for Etsy. It changes every 30 seconds, so have it ready for the next step.

Part 3: Confirm and finish

    Enter the code and choose Confirm

    Back on Etsy, enter the code from Authenticator App - Novaz into the text box under the QR code and choose "Confirm".

    Save your backup codes

    Etsy now shows your backup codes. Choose "Save to your device" or "Copy codes" and keep them somewhere safe, then select "Complete". 2 factor authentication is now on.

    Know when Etsy will ask for a code

    Etsy asks for your password and a code from Authenticator App - Novaz when you sign in on a different browser or a new device, and every 30 days. On the Etsy Seller app, you can also set up 2FA from the "More" tab under "Account & app settings" > "2 Factor authentication".

If something goes wrong

  • Etsy rejects the code: make sure your iPhone sets its date and time automatically (Settings > General > Date & Time), then enter the newest code.
  • There's no call or text option for your country: phone codes aren't available everywhere, which is why Etsy points you to an authenticator app like Authenticator App - Novaz.
  • Etsy says "We just sent you a code": that's a separate security code sent to the email on your account. Check your spam folder; if you don't enter it within 5 minutes, a new one is sent at your next sign-in attempt.
  • You don't have your phone at sign-in: enter one of your backup codes in the "Security Code" field instead.

How to recover your Etsy account

Every time you turn on 2 factor authentication, Etsy gives you a set of 9-digit backup codes. They're shown only once, and each works only once. If you can't use Authenticator App - Novaz, sign in with your username and password, then enter a backup code in the "Security Code" field instead of the 2FA code. Once you're in, update your 2FA settings from the Security page. Etsy Support will never ask for your backup codes, so don't share them. If you don't have a working backup code, select "I still need help" on the sign-in help page and reach out to Etsy Support.
