Name.com 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App

Your Name.com account controls your domain names, so it deserves more than a password. Name.com calls the feature Two-Step Verification: after your username and password, you enter a 6-digit security code from an authenticator app. Its guides are written for Google Authenticator, and Authenticator App - Novaz works the same way.

Whoever controls your Name.com account controls your domains, so 2FA keeps them from being stolen. Name.com secures sign-ins with an authenticator app — set it up once and you're protected on every login.

Before you start

  • Your Name.com username and password
  • Authenticator App - Novaz installed on your iPhone or iPad
  • A name for your device, such as "Jane's iPhone": Name.com asks for one, and it's case-sensitive if you later type the secret key by hand
  • A safe place to keep backup codes, and optionally a mobile number for backup text messages
  • If you use the Name.com API, a minute to re-allow API access afterwards: it's blocked by default once Two-Step Verification is on

Part 1: Turn on 2FA in Name.com

    Open Settings

    Log in to your account at name.com. Click the "User" icon at the top right, open the drop-down menu and click "Settings".

    Go to Two-Step Verification

    In the left column, under "Security", click "Two-Step Verification".

    Click Setup Authenticator App

    Click the blue "Setup Authenticator App" button, enter a name for your device and click "Add Credential". A QR code pops up; leave it on screen.

Part 2: Add Name.com to Authenticator App - Novaz

    Open Authenticator App - Novaz, tap the + button and scan the QR code. If it won't scan, click "Problems with QR Code?" below the QR code on Name.com, choose to enter a setup key in the app, and type the "Secret Key". Use the device name exactly as it appears on Name.com as the account name, then tap "Save".

    Note the 6-digit code

    Authenticator App - Novaz now shows a 6-digit verification code for Name.com. It changes every 30 seconds, so have it ready for the next step.

Part 3: Confirm and finish

    Enter the code and click Verify Code

    Back on Name.com, type the 6-digit code and click "Verify Code". A notification confirms that the authenticator is activated.

    Generate your backup codes

    Still on the "Two-Step Verification" page, click "Show Backup Code" on the right side. Name.com generates a list of codes; print them or store them somewhere safe. Each code works once, and generating new codes disables the old ones.

    Add a backup phone (optional)

    Name.com also lets you add your phone number for backup text messages on the "Two-Step Verification" page. This only works once an authenticator app is already set up.

If something goes wrong

  • Name.com rejects the code: make sure your iPhone sets its date and time automatically (Settings > General > Date & Time), then enter the newest code.
  • The QR code won't scan or doesn't appear: click "Problems with QR Code?" and enter the secret key by hand. The account name must match your device name on Name.com exactly, including capital letters.
  • Your API calls stop working after setup: go to "Settings" > "Security Settings", scroll to the "Name.com API" section and switch the red toggle to green. The API itself has no two-step check.
  • An old backup code fails after you created new ones: generating new codes disables all earlier ones, so use the newest list.

How to recover your Name.com account

Name.com issues backup codes for exactly this situation: if you can't use the phone with Authenticator App - Novaz, use one of your backup codes to sign in instead of an app code. Each code works only once, so keep track of the ones you've used. If you added a phone for backup text messages, follow the prompts at login and Name.com sends a one-time account recovery text message with a verification code to that number. Name.com's help articles don't describe a route for someone with neither backup codes nor a backup phone, so generate your codes on the day you turn this on.

Frequently asked questions

Does Name.com only work with Google Authenticator?
Name.com's guides are written for Google Authenticator and also cover Authy. Authenticator App - Novaz adds the account from the same QR code or secret key and shows the same 6-digit codes.
Can I still use the Name.com API with Two-Step Verification on?
Not by default. Turn on API access under "Settings" > "Security Settings" > "Name.com API". This bypasses the two-step check for API calls only; your Name.com logins still need a code.
What happens to my old backup codes if I create new ones?
They stop working. Name.com says generating new codes disables any existing backup codes, so keep only the newest list.
