Stripe 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App

stripe.com SupportedChecked against official help · September 25, 2026

Your Stripe login opens the Dashboard where you see payments, payouts and your business details, so it needs more than a password. Stripe calls the feature two-step authentication and supports authenticator apps, which it ranks as more secure than text messages, so Authenticator App - Novaz can supply your codes.

A Stripe account can be tied to your money and personal finances, so a stolen password is a direct financial risk. Besides an authenticator app, Stripe also offers SMS text codes, security keys and a hardware token. An authenticator app (TOTP) is usually the best balance of security and convenience — and it's safer than SMS codes, which can be intercepted through SIM-swap attacks. For the strongest protection, Stripe also supports hardware security keys.

2FA methods Stripe supports

  • SMS text message
  • Authenticator app (TOTP)
  • Security key (U2F / WebAuthn)
  • Hardware token

Before you start

  • Your Stripe email address and password
  • Authenticator App - Novaz installed on your iPhone or iPad
  • The Stripe Dashboard open on a computer, so the QR code is on a different screen from your phone
  • A safe place for your backup code: Stripe shows it only once, when you first enable two-step authentication

Part 1: Turn on 2FA in Stripe

  1. 1

    Open the Personal details page

Sign in to the Stripe Dashboard and open the "Personal details" page (dashboard.stripe.com/settings/user).

  2. 2

    Click Add authentication method

Find the "Two-step authentication" section and click "Add authentication method".

  3. 3

    Select Use an authenticator app

Select "Use an authenticator app". Stripe shows a QR code. Keep the page open while you pick up your phone.

Part 2: Add Stripe to Authenticator App - Novaz

  1. 4

Add Stripe in Authenticator App - Novaz

Open Authenticator App - Novaz, tap the + button and scan the QR code. If it won't scan, select "Enter code manually" on Stripe, choose to enter a setup key in the app and type the key exactly as shown. Check the account name, then tap "Save".

  2. 5

    Note the 6-digit code

Authenticator App - Novaz now shows a 6-digit code for Stripe. It changes every 30 seconds, so have it ready for the next step.

Part 3: Confirm and finish

  1. 6

    Confirm the code

Back on Stripe, enter the code shown in Authenticator App - Novaz to finish setup.

  2. 7

    Write down your backup code

Stripe now shows your backup code. It's displayed only once, so write it down and keep it somewhere safe, such as on paper in a locked place rather than in cloud storage. From your next sign-in, you'll use Authenticator App - Novaz for two-step authentication.

If something goes wrong

  • Stripe says the code is incorrect: check the clock on your iPhone by opening time.gov in its browser. If it's off by more than 20 seconds, fix it (Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically) and try again.
  • You have more than one Stripe user account: each one has its own codes, so make sure you're using the Authenticator App - Novaz entry for the account you're signing in to.
  • Codes stopped working after you changed your settings: Stripe generates a new QR code each time you enable or change two-step authentication. Delete the old Stripe entries in the app and use the one from the newest QR code.

How to recover your Stripe account

Stripe issues one backup code when you first enable two-step authentication. To use it, sign in with your email and password, click "Sign in another way" when asked for two-step authentication, click "I don't have any of these" and enter the backup code; this removes two-step authentication so you can set it up again. If you can still sign in and lost the code, generate a new one from your two-step authentication settings; the old one stops working. Without the backup code, an account owner submits an account recovery request at dashboard.stripe.com/recover. A decision can take up to a couple of business days, and if it's approved, Stripe emails a link you must click within 48 hours. Team members who aren't owners ask an account administrator to reset their two-step authentication on the "Team settings" page.
