Xbox Live supports app-based two-factor authentication (2FA). Turning it on adds a second layer of protection, so a stolen password alone can't unlock your Xbox Live account.
A Xbox Live account holds purchases, in-game items, and payment details that thieves can resell. Besides an authenticator app, Xbox Live also offers SMS text codes, email codes, a proprietary app and phone-call codes. An authenticator app (TOTP) is usually the best balance of security and convenience — and it's safer than SMS codes, which can be intercepted through SIM-swap attacks.

How to recover your Xbox Live account
