1Password 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App
Your 1Password account holds the items in your vaults, so it deserves protection beyond your account password and Secret Key. 1Password calls the feature two-factor authentication and supports authenticator apps, so Authenticator App - Novaz can supply the six-digit code it asks for when you sign in on a new device.
A 1Password account is part of your security setup, so it deserves strong 2FA of its own. Besides an authenticator app, 1Password also offers security keys, a hardware token and a proprietary app. An authenticator app (TOTP) is usually the best balance of security and convenience. For the strongest protection, 1Password also supports hardware security keys.
2FA methods 1Password supports
- Authenticator app (TOTP)
- Security key (U2F / WebAuthn)
- Hardware token
- Proprietary app
Before you start
- Your 1Password account password and Secret Key, to sign in on 1Password.com
- A 1Password membership and 1Password 7 or later, which two-factor authentication requires
- Authenticator App - Novaz installed on your iPhone or iPad: 1Password asks you to keep these codes in a different authenticator app, not in 1Password itself
- 1Password.com open in a browser on a computer, and a safe place to store a 16-character secret
Part 1: Turn on 2FA in 1Password
- 1
Sign in on 1Password.com
Sign in to your account on 1Password.com in your browser.
- 2
Open Manage Account
Select your name in the top right, then select "Manage Account".
- 3
Open Manage Two-Factor Authentication
Select "More Actions" > "Manage Two-Factor Authentication".
- 4
Select Set Up App and save the secret
Select "Set Up App". You'll see a square barcode (QR code) with a 16-character secret next to it. Write the secret down and store it somewhere safe, like with your Emergency Kit: it's your backup if you lose access to your authenticator app.
Part 2: Add 1Password to Authenticator App - Novaz
- 5
Scan the QR code with Authenticator App - Novaz
Open Authenticator App - Novaz on your phone, tap the + button and scan the QR code on 1Password.com. Check the account name, then tap "Save".
- 6
Note the six-digit code
After the scan, Authenticator App - Novaz shows a six-digit authentication code for 1Password. Keep the app open for the next step.
Part 3: Confirm and finish
- 7
Select Next and confirm the code
Back on 1Password.com, select "Next". Enter the six-digit authentication code from Authenticator App - Novaz, then select "Confirm". Your 1Password account is now protected by two-factor authentication.
- 8
Know when 1Password asks for a code
You'll enter a code from Authenticator App - Novaz to sign in on a new device or reauthorize an existing one. After that, 1Password won't ask again on that device unless you sign out, change your email address or account password, regenerate your Secret Key, have your account recovered, or two-factor authentication is required on the next sign-in.
If something goes wrong
- 1Password isn't accepting your codes: make sure the date and time are set correctly on your devices. On iPhone, let it set them automatically (Settings > General > Date & Time).
- You can't find the option to turn on two-factor authentication: if your organization uses Duo, the option isn't shown, because Duo already provides multi-factor authentication.
- 1Password asks you to set up two-factor authentication when you sign up, sign in on a new device or unlock 1Password: your 1Password Business administrator has enforced it, so follow the steps above.
- A device you don't recognize is still linked: on 1Password.com, open "Manage Account", select the gear button next to that app or browser and choose "Unlink" or "Require 2FA on Next Sign-in".

How to recover your 1Password account
1Password's help doesn't describe backup codes; your backup is the 16-character secret you wrote down during setup. If you lose access to your authenticator app, you can't sign in on new devices until two-factor authentication is turned off. On a device where 1Password is already authorized, open and unlock 1Password, select your account or collection, then "Manage Accounts", choose the account, then select the ellipsis > "Turn off two-factor authentication" > "Turn Off". On 1Password.com in an authorized browser, go to "Manage Account" > "More Actions" > "Manage Two-Factor Authentication", select "Turn Off Two-Factor Authentication" and enter your account password. With no authorized device or browser, ask a family organizer, team administrator or owner to recover your account: recovery gives you a new Secret Key and account password and resets your two-factor authentication.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I store my 1Password codes in 1Password itself?
- No. 1Password can store one-time passwords for other services, but it asks you to use a different authenticator app for your 1Password account. Storing them in 1Password would be like putting the key to a safe inside the safe.
- Can I use a security key instead of an authenticator app?
- Yes. 1Password accepts a security key, like YubiKey or Titan, as a second factor for your account.
- Can my company require two-factor authentication?
- Yes. In 1Password Business, an owner, administrator or a group with the Manage Settings permission can enforce it by selecting "Policies" in the sidebar, then "Manage" on the Authentication policy, once the account password policy is set to Strict requirements. They can also allow security keys or use Duo.
