AdGuard 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App
Your AdGuard account holds your license keys, subscriptions and the personal information linked to them. AdGuard calls the feature two-factor authentication (2FA): it's off by default, and once it's on you can choose "Code from authenticator app", which works with almost any authenticator app for iOS or Android, including Authenticator App - Novaz.
A AdGuard account is part of your security setup, so it deserves strong 2FA of its own. AdGuard secures sign-ins with an authenticator app — set it up once and you're protected on every login.
2FA methods AdGuard supports
- Authenticator app (TOTP)
Before you start
- Your AdGuard account email address and password
- Access to the inbox of that email address, because AdGuard emails you a code before it turns 2FA on
- Authenticator App - Novaz installed on your iPhone or iPad
- Your AdGuard account open on a computer, so the QR code is on a different screen from your phone
- A safe place to keep your setup key
Part 1: Turn on 2FA in AdGuard
- 1
Open the Settings tab
Log in to your AdGuard account and select "Settings" in the menu on the left. You'll see a "Security" section with your email and password.
- 2
Turn on Two-factor authentication
Scroll down to "Two-factor authentication" and switch the toggle on.
- 3
Confirm with the code from your email
AdGuard shows "Check your inbox to enable 2FA" and sends a code to the email address on your account. Type it into "Code from email" and click "Enable". If it doesn't arrive, click "Resend code".
- 4
Choose Code from authenticator app
Two options now appear under "Two-factor authentication": "One-time email code" and "Code from authenticator app". Select "Code from authenticator app". AdGuard opens "Use your authenticator app to enable 2FA" with a QR code and "Your setup key is" followed by the key.
- 5
Save your setup key
Before you scan, click "Download setup key (.txt)" or copy the key somewhere safe. AdGuard says you may need it to set up 2FA without a QR code, or to link your account to a new authenticator app if your device is lost or stolen.
Part 2: Add AdGuard to Authenticator App - Novaz
- 6
Add AdGuard in Authenticator App - Novaz
Open Authenticator App - Novaz, tap the + button and scan the QR code. If the camera can't read it, choose to enter a setup key and type the key exactly as AdGuard shows it, using "AdGuard" as the account name, then tap "Save".
- 7
Note the 6-digit code
Authenticator App - Novaz now shows a 6-digit code for AdGuard. Have it ready for the next step.
Part 3: Confirm and finish
- 8
Enter the code and click Enable
Back on AdGuard, type the code into "Code from app" and click "Enable".
- 9
Know what you'll see at login
The next time you log in, AdGuard shows a "Two-factor authentication" page asking you to "Enter the code generated by your 2FA app". Type the code from Authenticator App - Novaz into "2FA code" and click "Check".
- 10
Save a way to recover your account
If AdGuard offers backup or recovery codes, download them or write them down and store them somewhere safe. They are how you get back into your account if you ever lose your phone. If it doesn't, check how AdGuard recovers accounts before you need it.
If something goes wrong
- AdGuard shows an authentication error: AdGuard says an unsynchronized clock may be the cause, so make sure your iPhone sets its date and time automatically (Settings > General > Date & Time).
- The code changed while you were typing: wait for the next one in Authenticator App - Novaz and enter that instead.
- The email code to turn on 2FA hasn't arrived: click "Resend code" and check the inbox of the email address shown under "Settings".

How to recover your AdGuard account
AdGuard's knowledge base doesn't describe backup codes or any other way back in, so the setup key is your safety net: AdGuard says you'll need it to recover your account if your phone is lost or stolen. On your new phone, enter the saved key (or the one in the file from "Download setup key (.txt)") in Authenticator App - Novaz to link your account to the new app. Store the key in a secure place, as AdGuard's setup window asks.
Frequently asked questions
- Is two-factor authentication on by default for AdGuard accounts?
- No. It's optional for personal accounts and disabled when you register. You turn it on yourself under "Settings".
- Which authenticator app can I use with AdGuard?
- AdGuard supports an authenticator app for Android or iOS and says you can use almost any such app, so Authenticator App - Novaz works.
- What's the difference between the two 2FA options?
- With "One-time email code", AdGuard emails you a code each time you log in with your password. With "Code from authenticator app", it asks for the code generated by your authenticator app instead.
- Is "I prefer to log in with a one-time code" the same as 2FA?
- No. That separate checkbox under "Settings" makes a one-time email code your main way to log in, and you can still log in with your password. It's selected automatically based on your last login method.
