Aol Mail 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App

mail.aol.com SupportedChecked against official help · September 25, 2026

Your AOL account signs you in to AOL Mail, so a stolen password could expose your inbox and let someone change your account settings. AOL calls the feature 2-step verification and lets you get the second step from an authenticator app instead of a text or call, which means Authenticator App - Novaz can supply your codes.

Your Aol Mail inbox is the master key to your other accounts — attackers use it to reset passwords everywhere. Besides an authenticator app, Aol Mail also offers SMS text codes, phone-call codes, email codes and security keys. An authenticator app (TOTP) is usually the best balance of security and convenience — and it's safer than SMS codes, which can be intercepted through SIM-swap attacks. For the strongest protection, Aol Mail also supports hardware security keys.

2FA methods Aol Mail supports

  • SMS text message
  • Phone call
  • Authenticator app (TOTP)
  • Email code
  • Security key (U2F / WebAuthn)

Before you start

  • Your AOL username and password
  • At least 2 recovery methods on your account, such as a recovery mobile number and a recovery email address: AOL only shows the authenticator app option once you have them
  • Authenticator App - Novaz installed on your iPhone or iPad
  • The AOL Account Security page open on a computer, so the QR code is on a different screen from your phone

Part 1: Turn on 2FA in Aol Mail

  1. 1

    Open the Account Security page

Sign in to your AOL Account Security page at login.aol.com/myaccount/security. If you still need recovery methods, scroll to the bottom of the page, click "Add email" or "Add phone number" and follow the prompts to verify them.

  2. 2

    Click Turn on 2SV

Next to "2-Step Verification", click "Turn on 2SV", then click "Get started".

  3. 3

    Choose Authenticator app

Select "Authenticator app" as your 2-step verification method and click "Continue". AOL shows a QR code; keep the page open while you pick up your phone.

Part 2: Add Aol Mail to Authenticator App - Novaz

  1. 4

Scan the QR code in Authenticator App - Novaz

Open Authenticator App - Novaz, tap the + button and scan the QR code on the AOL page. Check the account name, then tap "Save".

  2. 5

    Note the verification code

Authenticator App - Novaz now shows a verification code for AOL. Have the current one ready for the next step.

Part 3: Confirm and finish

  1. 6

Enter the code and click Done

Back on AOL, click "Continue", enter the code shown in Authenticator App - Novaz, then click "Done". 2-step verification is now on, and AOL emails your primary and backup addresses to confirm the change.

  2. 7

Know when AOL will ask for a code

When you sign in from a device, browser or location you haven't used before, enter your password, then the code from Authenticator App - Novaz, and click "Verify". After that, AOL may not ask again on the same device.

If something goes wrong

  • There's no "Authenticator app" option: add recovery methods until you have at least 2. AOL also says the option isn't available for all accounts yet; if it still doesn't appear, use 2-step verification by phone (text or call).
  • AOL says the code is wrong: make sure your iPhone sets its date and time automatically (Settings > General > Date & Time), then enter the newest code.
  • A device you no longer trust skips the code: AOL may not ask again on a device, browser or location you've verified, so deauthorize it on your Recent activity page.

How to recover your Aol Mail account

AOL's help pages don't describe backup codes for 2-step verification, so your recovery phone number and email address are what matter. If you replace your phone while still signed in, go to the Account Security page, click "Manage" next to "2-Step Verification", click "Turn off", and set it up again with Authenticator App - Novaz on the new phone. If you can't sign in, AOL's route back is the Sign-in Helper at login.aol.com/forgot, which uses the recovery mobile number or alternate email address on your account. AOL warns that if your recovery info is wrong or inaccessible, you may not be able to regain access, so keep it current on the Account Security page.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need two recovery methods first?
AOL only shows "Authenticator app" as a 2-step verification method on accounts with at least 2 recovery methods. Add a mobile number or email address at the bottom of the Account Security page.
Will AOL ask for a code every time I sign in?
No. AOL asks the first time you sign in from a device, browser or location you haven't used before. After you verify, you may not be prompted again there.
Can I still use AOL Mail in another email app?
Yes, with an app password. On the Account Security page, click "Generate app password" or "Generate and manage app passwords", then "Get Started", name the app and click "Generate password". App passwords stay active even if you change your main password, so delete any you no longer use.
Can I switch from text codes to an authenticator app?
Yes. AOL lists changing the verification method, such as from SMS to an authenticator app, as a security change and emails you when it happens.
