Canva 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App

Your Canva account holds your designs, brand kits and shared team folders. Canva calls the feature multi-factor authentication (MFA) and lets you scan its QR code with your preferred authenticator app, such as Authenticator App - Novaz. It also offers SMS verification.

A Canva account can hold your creative work and files, so protect it with 2FA. Besides an authenticator app, Canva also offers SMS text codes. An authenticator app (TOTP) is usually the best balance of security and convenience — and it's safer than SMS codes, which can be intercepted through SIM-swap attacks.

Before you start

  • A Canva account verified through Canva's confirmation email
  • A Canva password: Canva asks for it during setup. If you sign in another way, set one first under Settings > Login > Password
  • An account that isn't managed through single sign-on (SSO), since MFA isn't available for SSO-managed accounts
  • Authenticator App - Novaz installed on your iPhone or iPad
  • Somewhere safe to keep the backup codes Canva gives you at the end

Part 1: Turn on 2FA in Canva

    Open Account and security

    From the Canva homepage, open your account profile, select "Your account", then "Account and security".

    Go to Security

    Select "Security" and find the "Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)" section.

    Click Enable next to Authenticator app

    Click "Enable" next to "Authenticator app". Enter your Canva password and click "Confirm password". Canva then shows a QR code.

Part 2: Add Canva to Authenticator App - Novaz

    Scan the QR code with Authenticator App - Novaz

    Open Authenticator App - Novaz, tap the + button and scan the QR code. If it won't scan, click "Show secret key" in Canva and enter the key in Novaz instead. Use "Canva" as the account name, then tap "Save".

    Note the 6-digit code

    Authenticator App - Novaz now shows a 6-digit code for Canva. It changes every 30 seconds, so have the current one ready.

Part 3: Confirm and finish

    Enter the code and enable the app

    Back in Canva, enter the 6-digit code and click "Enable authenticator app".

    Copy your backup codes

    Canva shows your backup codes. Click "Copy codes", store them somewhere other than your phone, then click "Finish setup".

If something goes wrong

  • Canva says the code is wrong: make sure your iPhone sets its date and time automatically (Settings > General > Date & Time), then enter the newest code.
  • You can't find the MFA settings or can't turn them on: check that your email address is verified and that your account isn't managed through SSO. SSO users should ask their IT admin.
  • Canva asks for a password you've never set: add one under Settings > Login > Password, then start the setup again.
  • You lost your phone: sign in with one of your backup codes instead of the app code. Each code works once.

How to recover your Canva account

If you lose the phone with Authenticator App - Novaz, sign in with one of the backup codes you copied during setup; each code works once. Once you're in, create a fresh set under "Backup codes" with "Generate" or "Regenerate", and set up the authenticator app again on your new phone. If you have no backup codes left, use Canva's account recovery form. If your account is managed through SSO, ask your IT admin first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use SMS instead of an authenticator app?
Canva also offers SMS verification. An authenticator app such as Authenticator App - Novaz keeps working without mobile signal and can't be redirected by a SIM swap.
Can I turn on MFA if I sign in with SSO?
No. Canva says MFA isn't available for SSO-managed accounts; your organization's identity provider handles the second step instead.
How do I get new backup codes?
In the MFA section of your security settings, use "Generate" or "Regenerate" under "Backup codes". Each code works once, so replace them when you've used a few.
Why does Canva ask for my password during setup?
Canva asks you to confirm your password before it shows the QR code. If your account doesn't have one yet, set it under Settings > Login > Password.
