Coursera 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App

Your Coursera account holds your courses and progress, and two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security on top of your password. Coursera calls the feature two-factor authentication (2FA) and works with your preferred authenticator app, naming Google Authenticator as an example, so Authenticator App - Novaz can supply the 6-digit codes. Coursera notes that the feature is still in beta.

Before you start

  • Your Coursera email address and password (Coursera asks for the password during setup)
  • A computer: Coursera's instructions start with logging into Coursera on a computer, so the QR code is on a different screen from your phone

  • Access to the feature: two-factor authentication is still in beta, so it may not be available to all learners yet

Part 1: Turn on 2FA in Coursera

    Open your Settings on a computer

    Log into Coursera on a computer and go to your Settings page (coursera.org/account-settings).

    Click the enable button

    Under the "Two Factor Authentication" section, click the button Coursera's help labels "Enable Two-Factor Authentication?".

    Enter your password

    Enter your Coursera password. Coursera then shows a QR code on your screen; keep the page open.

Part 2: Add Coursera to Authenticator App - Novaz

    Add Coursera in Authenticator App - Novaz

    Open Authenticator App - Novaz and tap the + button to add a new account. Scan the QR code on your computer screen, check that the account is named "Coursera", then tap "Save".

    Note the 6-digit code

    Authenticator App - Novaz now shows a 6-digit code for Coursera. It changes every 30 seconds, so have it ready for the next step.

Part 3: Confirm and finish

    Enter the code and click Verify Code

    Back on Coursera, enter the 6-digit code from Authenticator App - Novaz, then click "Verify Code". Two-factor authentication is now on.

    Use a code every time you log in

    From now on, Coursera asks for a code from your authentication app every time you log in, on top of your email address and password.

    Save a way to recover your account

    If Coursera offers backup or recovery codes, download them or write them down and store them somewhere safe. They are how you get back into your account if you ever lose your phone. If it doesn't, check how Coursera recovers accounts before you need it.

If something goes wrong

  • There's no "Two Factor Authentication" section in your Settings: the feature is still in beta and may not be available to all learners.
  • Coursera rejects the code: make sure your iPhone sets its date and time automatically (Settings > General > Date & Time), then enter the newest code.
  • You can't scan the QR code on your phone's own screen: start the setup on a computer, as Coursera's instructions describe.
  • A computer or phone you were logged in on is lost or stolen: in your Settings, under the "Connected devices" section, click "Log out from all devices" and enter your password.

How to recover your Coursera account

Coursera's help doesn't describe backup codes or a recovery route for a lost authenticator, so move your codes while you still can. If you're replacing your phone, log into coursera.org on a computer, go to your Settings, click "Disable Two-Factor Authentication" under the "Two Factor Authentication" section and enter your password. Then set it up again with Authenticator App - Novaz on the new phone, using the steps above. If a device you were logged in on goes missing, use "Log out from all devices" under "Connected devices" in your Settings; this logs out every device except the one you're using.
