Figma 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App

Your Figma account opens everything in Figma: your teams and folders, your files and the Figma Community. Figma calls the feature two-factor authentication (2FA). It supports authenticator apps as well as SMS, so Authenticator App - Novaz can supply your codes. Once 2FA is on, Figma asks you to confirm your identity each time you log in.

A Figma account can hold your creative work and files, so protect it with 2FA. Besides an authenticator app, Figma also offers SMS text codes. An authenticator app (TOTP) is usually the best balance of security and convenience — and it's safer than SMS codes, which can be intercepted through SIM-swap attacks.

Before you start

  • Your Figma email address and password. Figma asks for the password to confirm your identity before setup starts
  • An account that logs in with email and password. If you log in with Google SSO or SAML SSO, you can't enable 2FA in Figma and need to turn it on with your identity provider instead
  • Authenticator App - Novaz installed on your iPhone or iPad before you start. Figma has you choose your method at the beginning of setup and recommends installing the app first
  • A safe place for your recovery codes, such as a password manager or encrypted file storage

Part 1: Turn on 2FA in Figma

    Open Settings

    In the Figma file browser, click your name in the top-left corner and select "Settings" from the account menu.

    Click Enable two-factor authentication

    On the "Security" tab, click "Enable two-factor authentication".

    Confirm your password

    Enter your Figma password to confirm your identity and click "Continue".

    Continue past the app links

    Figma shows links to download and install an authenticator app. Authenticator App - Novaz is already on your phone, so click "Continue". Don't select "Send me an SMS instead", which is the SMS route. Figma then displays a unique barcode. Keep it on screen.

Part 2: Add Figma to Authenticator App - Novaz

    Scan the barcode in Authenticator App - Novaz

    Open Authenticator App - Novaz, tap the + button and scan the barcode Figma shows. Check the account name, then tap "Save".

    Note the six-digit code

    Authenticator App - Novaz now generates a six-digit code for Figma. Use the code that's currently on screen.

Part 3: Confirm and finish

    Enter the code and click Verify

    Back in Figma, enter the six-digit code in the field provided and click "Verify".

    Save your recovery codes

    Click "Continue to recovery codes". Figma displays a list of recovery codes on screen. Save a copy somewhere safe, such as a password manager or encrypted file storage. Two-factor authentication is now on.

If something goes wrong

  • There's no way to enable two-factor authentication: if you log in with Google SSO or SAML SSO, set up 2FA with your identity provider instead.
  • Figma rejects the code: make sure your iPhone sets its date and time automatically (Settings > General > Date & Time), then enter the code currently shown in Authenticator App - Novaz.
  • You set up SMS by mistake: you can still add an authenticator app. With both on, Figma asks for the app code first, and "Send me an SMS" switches to a text.
  • You're moving to a new phone: next to "Authenticator apps are enabled", click "Disable", enter your password, click "Continue" and then "Ok". Then set up 2FA again with Authenticator App - Novaz on the new phone. Figma's help puts this in the Password section of the "Account" tab.

How to recover your Figma account

When you finish setup, Figma displays a list of recovery codes and recommends keeping a copy somewhere safe, such as a password manager or encrypted file storage. Its help page doesn't say how many codes you get, how to use one at login, or how to regain access without them, so save them before you close the setup screen. If you also set up SMS, Figma asks for the app code first, and you can click "Send me an SMS" to get a code by text instead.

Frequently asked questions

Which two-factor methods does Figma support?

Can I use both SMS and an authenticator app?

Figma's own 2FA isn't available if you log in with Google SSO or SAML SSO. Turn on two-factor or multi-factor authentication with your identity provider instead.
Can my organization require 2FA?
Each Figma account sets up 2FA on its own. With Governance+ for Figma Enterprise, admins can turn on the "2FA for Guests" toggle under "Guest Membership" in the Admin console. Guests without 2FA can still accept invitations, but they can't open the organization's files until they enable it.
