Hatena 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App

hatena.ne.jp SupportedChecked against official help · September 25, 2026

Your Hatena ID ("はてなID") is the account you sign in to Hatena with. Hatena calls the feature multi-factor authentication ("多要素認証") and supports time-based one-time passwords (TOTP), so Authenticator App - Novaz can generate the 6-digit codes. Once it's on, you sign in with your Hatena ID or email address, your password and a one-time password from the app.

A hijacked Hatena account can be used to impersonate you and scam your contacts, so 2FA matters. Hatena secures sign-ins with an authenticator app — set it up once and you're protected on every login.

2FA methods Hatena supports

  • Authenticator app (TOTP)

Before you start

  • Your Hatena ID or email address and password (Hatena may ask for the password again to confirm it's you)
  • Authenticator App - Novaz installed on your iPhone or iPad. Hatena's help lists Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator as apps it has tested; it supports TOTP codes, which is what Authenticator App - Novaz generates
  • Hatena's settings page open on a computer, so the QR code is on a different screen from your phone. Hatena's help describes scanning a QR code and doesn't mention a key to type
  • A safe place for the recovery codes Hatena shows at the end

Part 1: Turn on 2FA in Hatena

  1. 1

Sign in to your Hatena account

Sign in at accounts.hatena.ne.jp/login with the Hatena account you want to protect. For a sub-account, sign in to that sub-account.

  2. 2

    Open the settings page

Go to the settings page at accounts.hatena.ne.jp/settings.

  3. 3

Click Enable next to Multi-factor authentication

In the middle of the settings page, find "多要素認証" (Multi-factor authentication) and click "有効にする" (Enable) on its right.

  4. 4

    Confirm your password

If Hatena asks you to confirm your identity ("本人確認"), enter your password and click "送信する" (Submit). The "多要素認証の設定" (Multi-factor authentication settings) screen opens with a QR code.

Part 2: Add Hatena to Authenticator App - Novaz

  1. 5

Scan the QR code in Authenticator App - Novaz

Open Authenticator App - Novaz, tap the + button and scan the QR code. Use "Hatena" as the account name, then tap "Save". If you opened the settings screen on your phone, Hatena says tapping the QR code opens your authenticator app.

  2. 6

    Note the 6-digit code

Authenticator App - Novaz now shows a 6-digit one-time password for Hatena. It's only valid for a short time, so have the current one ready.

Part 3: Confirm and finish

  1. 7

Enter the code and click Submit

Back on Hatena, type the code into the code field and click "送信する" (Submit).

  2. 8

    Save your recovery codes

Hatena confirms that multi-factor authentication is on and shows your recovery codes ("リカバリーコード"). Store them somewhere safe, for example with "ダウンロードする" (Download). From your next sign-in, Hatena asks for a one-time password.

If something goes wrong

  • Hatena rejects the code: one-time passwords only last a short time, so enter the newest one. Also make sure your iPhone sets its date and time automatically (Settings > General > Date & Time).
  • You're setting up on your phone and can't scan the screen you're looking at: Hatena says that on a smartphone, tapping the QR code opens your authenticator app.
  • You've forgotten the password Hatena asks for: if your registered email address still works, reset it at accounts.hatena.ne.jp/password/forget.
  • You want to protect a sub-account too: sign in to the sub-account and set up multi-factor authentication from its own settings page.

How to recover your Hatena account

When setup finishes, Hatena shows recovery codes ("リカバリーコード"). Hatena says you need them to sign in if for some reason you can't get a one-time password, such as when you lose your smartphone, so keep them somewhere safe. If you're moving to a new phone and are still signed in, you can switch multi-factor authentication off and set it up again on the new phone: on the settings page, click "無効にする" (Disable) next to "多要素認証", enter your password if asked and click "送信する" (Submit), check it's the right account and click "無効にする" (Disable) again. Hatena's help doesn't describe what to do if you've lost both your phone and your recovery codes.
