Microsoft 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App

Two-step verification makes your Microsoft account ask for a second proof of identity on top of your password. Microsoft lets you choose a different authenticator app from its own, so you can use Authenticator App - Novaz for your codes.

Part 1: Turn on 2FA in Microsoft

    Open My Microsoft account

    Sign in, click your account icon in the top-right corner, and pick "My Microsoft account" from the menu.

    Go to the Security dashboard

    In the "Security" section, click the "Security dashboard" button.

    Manage how you sign in

    Find "Account Security" and click "Manage how I sign in".

    Turn on two-step verification

    Look for the "Additional security" section. Under "Two-step verification", click "Turn on".

    Continue the setup

    Click "Next" to keep going.

    Choose a different authenticator app

    Click "set up a different authenticator app" so you can use Authenticator App - Novaz.

    Keep the QR code in view

    Microsoft now shows a QR code containing your secret key. Leave the page open and pick up your device. Scan the code on your own screen, not the example pictured here.

Part 2: Add Microsoft to Authenticator App - Novaz

    In Authenticator App - Novaz, press the plus button, then point your phone at the QR code on the Microsoft page.

    Save the Microsoft account

    Once the scan works, the app sets the Microsoft logo and fills in your account name plus the secret key. Tap the icon to pick another if you prefer, then tap "Save".

Part 3: Confirm and finish

    Enter the 6-digit code

    Back on the Microsoft page, type the 6-digit code from Authenticator App - Novaz into the field and click "Next".

    Click "Next" again to reach the final screen.

    Click Finish

    Two-step verification now protects your Microsoft account, and future sign-ins will ask for a code from Authenticator App - Novaz. Click "Finish" to close the setup.

    Save a way to recover your account

    If Microsoft offers backup or recovery codes, download them or write them down and store them somewhere safe. They are how you get back into your account if you ever lose your phone. If it doesn't, check how Microsoft recovers accounts before you need it.

If something goes wrong

  • Microsoft won't accept the code: open Settings > General > Date & Time on your iPhone, make sure "Set Automatically" is on, and try again with a fresh code.
  • The code expired before you clicked Next: wait for the next code and type it in right away.
  • The QR code won't scan: zoom in on the Microsoft page so the code is larger, and hold your phone steady without glare.
  • Lost your phone: sign in with another method listed under "Manage how I sign in" if you have one, then set up Authenticator App - Novaz again on your new device.

How to recover your Microsoft account

If you lose access to your authenticator and Microsoft gave you backup or recovery codes when you turned on 2FA, sign in with one of them; keep them somewhere safe, away from your phone. Not every service issues codes. If Microsoft doesn't, or you didn't save them, use Microsoft's account-recovery or support process (or ask your admin, for a work account) to get back in.
