Optimizely 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App
Optimizely's individual 2-step verification adds a second level of authentication to your Optimizely Experimentation or Optimizely Personalization account, so it stays protected even if your password is compromised. After your password, you enter a security code from an authenticator app, which Authenticator App - Novaz can generate. Optimizely's guide covers Web Experimentation, Personalization, Performance Edge, Feature Experimentation and Full Stack (Legacy).
Turning on 2FA for Optimizely adds a second layer of protection, so a stolen password alone isn't enough to get in. Optimizely secures sign-ins with an authenticator app — set it up once and you're protected on every login.
2FA methods Optimizely supports
- Authenticator app (TOTP)
Before you start
- Your Optimizely username and password (Optimizely asks you to re-enter the password to confirm)
- An Optimizely login that isn't managed through Opti ID: if your organization migrated to Opti ID, Optimizely says users are managed in Opti ID instead, so follow the Opti ID user documentation
- Authenticator App - Novaz installed on your iPhone or iPad
- Optimizely open on a computer, because setup shows a QR code to scan with your phone
- A safe place for the backup codes Optimizely shows at the end
Part 1: Turn on 2FA in Optimizely
- 1
Open your Profile
Sign in to Optimizely. In the left navigation, open the menu under your name and click "Profile".
- 2
Click Enable under 2-Step Verification
Under "2-Step Verification", click "Enable".
- 3
Re-enter your password
In the "Enable 2-Step Verification" window, type your password under "Please re-enter your Optimizely password:" and click "Next". The "Scan the QR Code" window opens; keep it on screen.
Part 2: Add Optimizely to Authenticator App - Novaz
- 4
Scan the QR code with Authenticator App - Novaz
Open Authenticator App - Novaz, tap the + button and scan the QR code on your computer screen. This links your Optimizely account to your phone. Check the account name, then tap "Save".
- 5
Find the security code
Authenticator App - Novaz now shows a security code for Optimizely. It changes every 30 seconds, so use the current one.
Part 3: Confirm and finish
- 6
Enter the security code
On Optimizely, click "Next" to reach "Enter Your Security Code". Type the code from Authenticator App - Novaz into the field and click "Next".
- 7
Save your backup codes
When enrollment succeeds, Optimizely shows a window with your backup codes. Write them down and store them somewhere safe; you'll need them if you lose your phone.
- 8
Sign in with a code from now on
Each time you sign in, enter your username and password, then type the current code on the "2-Step Verification" page and click "Verify" before it expires.
If something goes wrong
- Optimizely says your code is invalid: make sure your iPhone sets its date and time automatically (Settings > General > Date & Time), then enter the newest code.
- The code runs out while you type: codes change every 30 seconds and Optimizely asks you to click "Verify" before the code expires, so wait for a fresh one and enter it straight away.
- You can't scan the QR code: Optimizely's help shows only a QR code for this step, so open the setup on a computer and scan the screen from Authenticator App - Novaz.
- You've lost your backup codes but can still sign in: click "Generate New Backup Codes" under Profile > Preferences > 2-step Verification. Your old codes stop working.

How to recover your Optimizely account
Optimizely gives you a list of backup codes when you turn on 2-step verification. Each code gives one-time access and stops working after it's used. If you're locked out, Optimizely suggests these steps in order: use a backup code; check your authenticator's time settings; if you're still signed in on another device, turn off 2-step verification in your Account Settings; ask an administrator on your account to open a support ticket for you with the email address of the affected user (if you're the admin, have another admin file it); and if none of that works, file an online ticket with Optimizely support.
Frequently asked questions

- I use Opti ID. Does this guide apply?
- Optimizely says that if your organization migrated to Opti ID, users must be managed in Opti ID, so follow the Opti ID user documentation instead.
