Snapchat 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App

snapchat.com Supported

Two-factor authentication keeps your Snapchat account, including your chats, Memories and friends list, out of reach of anyone who learns your password. Snapchat lets you receive sign-in codes from an authenticator app, and this guide shows how to use Authenticator App - Novaz for that.

A hijacked Snapchat account can be used to impersonate you and scam your contacts, so 2FA matters. Besides an authenticator app, Snapchat also offers SMS text codes. An authenticator app (TOTP) is usually the best balance of security and convenience — and it's safer than SMS codes, which can be intercepted through SIM-swap attacks.

2FA methods Snapchat supports

  • SMS text message
  • Authenticator app (TOTP)

Before you start

  • The Snapchat app, signed in to your account
  • A mobile number and an email address on your Snapchat account; Snapchat requires both before you can turn on two-factor authentication
  • Authenticator App - Novaz installed on the same iPhone or iPad
  • Enough free space to save a screenshot to the Files app
  • A safe place to keep the Recovery Code Snapchat gives you at the end

Part 1: Turn on 2FA in Snapchat

  1. 1

    Open Snapchat settings

Launch Snapchat and tap your profile photo at the upper left to open your Profile. From there, tap the gear icon at the upper right to open Settings.

  3. 3

    Pick Authentication App

Snapchat asks which security method you'd like to use. Choose "Authentication App", the most secure of the choices.

    Keep your Recovery Code safe

Two-factor authentication is now on. Snapchat gives you a Recovery Code: save it somewhere secure, such as in Authenticator App - Novaz or your photo gallery. You need it if you lose the phone or the app that makes your codes. Tap "Next" to finish.

If something goes wrong

  • If the import doesn't pick up a code, check that your screenshot shows the whole QR code, then take a new one and try again.
  • Snapchat rejecting your code? Make sure your iPhone sets its date and time automatically in Settings, then enter a fresh code.
  • If a code expires before you finish typing it, wait a few seconds for the next one and use that.
  • Lost the phone with your codes? Sign in with the Recovery Code you saved in the last step.

How to recover your Snapchat account

If you lose access to your authenticator and Snapchat gave you backup or recovery codes when you turned on 2FA, sign in with one of them; keep them somewhere safe, away from your phone. Not every service issues codes. If Snapchat doesn't, or you didn't save them, use Snapchat's account-recovery or support process (or ask your admin, for a work account) to get back in.
