Twitch 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App

twitch.tv Supported

Two-factor authentication protects your Twitch channel, followers and account settings from anyone who has your password. Twitch can take sign-in codes from an authenticator app, so you can generate them with Authenticator App - Novaz.

A Twitch account is linked to your profile and payment details, so 2FA is worth it. Besides an authenticator app, Twitch also offers SMS text codes and a proprietary app. An authenticator app (TOTP) is usually the best balance of security and convenience — and it's safer than SMS codes, which can be intercepted through SIM-swap attacks.

2FA methods Twitch supports

  • SMS text message
  • Proprietary app
  • Authenticator app (TOTP)

Before you start

  • Your Twitch login details
  • A mobile phone that can receive a text message from Twitch

If something goes wrong

  • The 7-digit text hasn't arrived? Double-check the phone number you entered and make sure your phone has signal.
  • If the QR code won't scan, zoom in on the pop-up or import a saved image of it through "Files" in the app.
  • Twitch rejecting the 6-digit code? Set your iPhone's date and time to update automatically, then use the newest code.
  • Codes change every 30 seconds; if yours expires while you're typing, wait for the next one.

How to recover your Twitch account

If you lose access to your authenticator and Twitch gave you backup or recovery codes when you turned on 2FA, sign in with one of them; keep them somewhere safe, away from your phone. Not every service issues codes. If Twitch doesn't, or you didn't save them, use Twitch's account-recovery or support process (or ask your admin, for a work account) to get back in.
