Vimeo 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App
Your Vimeo account holds your videos, your privacy settings and, on paid plans, your billing history, so it deserves more than a password. Vimeo calls the feature two-factor authentication (2FA) and offers it by email or with an authenticator app, so Authenticator App - Novaz can supply your 6-digit security codes.
A Vimeo account is linked to your profile and payment details, so 2FA is worth it. Besides an authenticator app, Vimeo also offers email codes. An authenticator app (TOTP) is usually the best balance of security and convenience.
2FA methods Vimeo supports
- Authenticator app (TOTP)
- Email code
Before you start
- Your Vimeo email address and password: you must be logged in to reach the security settings
- Access to the email inbox on your Vimeo account, since Vimeo can email you a code at login if you can't use the app
- Authenticator App - Novaz installed on your iPhone or iPad
- Vimeo open on a computer, so the QR code is on a different screen from your phone
Part 1: Turn on 2FA in Vimeo
- 1
Open Security Settings
Log in to Vimeo and go to "Security Settings" at vimeo.com/settings/account/security.
- 2
Choose the Authenticator option
Select "2FA" and choose "Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) - Authenticator". A window pops up with setup instructions and a QR code. Keep it open while you pick up your phone.
Part 2: Add Vimeo to Authenticator App - Novaz
- 3
Add Vimeo in Authenticator App - Novaz
Open Authenticator App - Novaz, tap the + button and scan the QR code. If the camera can't read it, choose to enter a setup key and type the security code Vimeo shows for manual entry exactly as written. Use "Vimeo" as the account name, then tap "Save".
- 4
Note the 6-digit code
Authenticator App - Novaz now shows a 6-digit security code for Vimeo. It changes every 30 seconds, so have it ready for the next step.
Part 3: Confirm and finish
- 5
Verify the app
Back in the Vimeo window, enter the 6-digit security code from Authenticator App - Novaz to verify your app.
- 6
Save settings
Save your settings. Two-factor authentication is on from your next login.
- 7
Know what login looks like now
Log in with your email and password as usual. Vimeo then asks for the security code from your authenticator app, so open Authenticator App - Novaz and enter the current code for Vimeo.
- 8
Save a way to recover your account
If Vimeo offers backup or recovery codes, download them or write them down and store them somewhere safe. They are how you get back into your account if you ever lose your phone. If it doesn't, check how Vimeo recovers accounts before you need it.
If something goes wrong
- Vimeo rejects the code: make sure your iPhone sets its date and time automatically (Settings > General > Date & Time), then enter the newest code before it changes.
- You're locked out after too many attempts: Vimeo blocks logins for 15 minutes. Wait it out, because each new attempt restarts the timer and resetting your password won't speed it up.
- You don't have your phone at login: on the security code screen, ask Vimeo to email you a new code instead.
- The emailed code doesn't arrive: check your spam folder and add @vimeo.com as a safe sender, then request a new code. If it still doesn't come, contact Vimeo support.

How to recover your Vimeo account
Vimeo's help pages don't describe backup codes. Your fallback is email: on the security code screen at login, you can request a code by email instead of using Authenticator App - Novaz, so keep access to the inbox on your Vimeo account. If you can't reach that inbox either, fill out the account access form at vimeo.com/help/account_access while logged out and click the "Reset Password isn't working" link on its second page to contact support. Vimeo will only change the login email once it has confirmed the account is yours: for a paid account, through your most recent payment (a receipt, invoice or card details such as the last 4 digits and the exact date and amount of the charge). For a free account with no payment history, Vimeo says there's no way to prove ownership and it can't restore access.
Frequently asked questions
- Which 2FA methods does Vimeo offer?
- Two: a security code sent to your email, or a 6-digit code from an authenticator app such as Authenticator App - Novaz. You pick one in "Security Settings" under "2FA".
- Do I need to verify my email to use 2FA?
- Vimeo asks you to verify your email address if you choose the email option and haven't verified it yet. For the authenticator option, a working inbox is still useful because Vimeo can email you a code at login.
- How do I turn 2FA off?
- Go to "Security Settings", select "2FA" and choose "Do not use Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)", then save your settings. Vimeo recommends keeping 2FA on.
- I log in with SSO on a Vimeo Enterprise team. Where do I set up 2FA?
- With SSO you're sent to your organization's own login page, which may include its own 2FA. Follow your organization's prompts there.
