XING 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App
Your XING account holds your professional profile, your contacts and your messages, so it deserves protection on top of your password. XING calls the feature two-factor authentication, or two-factor login ("Zweistufiger Login" in German), and accepts login codes from a third-party authentication app such as Authenticator App - Novaz.
A hijacked XING account can be used to impersonate you and scam your contacts, so 2FA matters. Besides an authenticator app, XING also offers SMS text codes. An authenticator app (TOTP) is usually the best balance of security and convenience — and it's safer than SMS codes, which can be intercepted through SIM-swap attacks.
2FA methods XING supports
- SMS text message
- Authenticator app (TOTP)
Before you start
- Your XING email address and password
- Authenticator App - Novaz installed on your iPhone or iPad before you start, as XING recommends
- XING open on a computer, so the setup screen is on a different screen from your phone
- A safe place for your 15-digit backup code
- Only if you'd rather use SMS codes: your mobile number saved in your XING login details first
Part 1: Turn on 2FA in XING
- 1
Open the two-factor authentication settings
Sign in to XING on the web and open the two-factor authentication page in your login details settings (xing.com/settings/account/credentials/twofa). XING's help page links straight to it.
- 2
Choose the authentication app option
XING offers two methods: SMS codes via your mobile phone, or a login code via a third-party authentication app. Pick the authentication app option. You need to set up at least one of the two to use the feature.
Part 2: Add XING to Authenticator App - Novaz
- 3
Add XING in Authenticator App - Novaz
Follow XING's on-screen instructions. When XING shows a QR code, open Authenticator App - Novaz, tap the + button and scan it. If you're given a setup key instead, choose to enter a setup key and type it exactly as shown. Use "XING" as the account name, then tap "Save".
- 4
Note the login code
Authenticator App - Novaz now shows a login code for XING. It changes every 30 seconds, so have it ready for the next step.
Part 3: Confirm and finish
- 5
Finish the setup on XING
Back on XING, complete the remaining steps, entering the current code from Authenticator App - Novaz when XING asks for it.
- 6
Save your 15-digit backup code
In the last step, XING shows you a personal 15-digit backup code. Store it somewhere safe, away from your phone: you'll need it if your phone breaks or is stolen.
- 7
Know when XING will ask for a code
From now on, XING asks for a login code from Authenticator App - Novaz each time you log in, after your password.
If something goes wrong
- XING rejects the code: make sure your iPhone sets its date and time automatically (Settings > General > Date & Time), then enter the newest code.
- The code changed while you were typing: wait for the next one in Authenticator App - Novaz and enter that instead.
- You want SMS codes instead of an app: add your mobile number to your login details (xing.com/settings/account/credentials/phone) first, then choose SMS codes.
- You've lost both your phone and the backup code: use XING's contact form for two-factor authentication and include proof of identity, as described below.

How to recover your XING account
XING gives you one 15-digit backup code when you activate two-factor authentication, meant for cases like a broken or stolen phone, so keep it somewhere you can reach without your phone. If you no longer have the backup code and want two-factor authentication turned off, contact XING through its contact form for two-factor authentication (xing.com/support/contact/login/two_factor_authentication). Attach a photo of the front of your ID card or driver's license as proof of identity. Your name, photo and date of birth must be clearly visible; you may black out any other information.
