How to secure your crypto exchange accounts with 2FA
Crypto accounts deserve extra care for one simple reason: once funds move, the transaction usually can't be reversed. There's no bank to call. That makes strong two-factor authentication essential, not optional.
Use an authenticator app, not SMS
Exchanges are a favourite target for SIM-swap attacks, where an attacker hijacks your phone number to steal SMS codes. An authenticator app generates TOTP codes on your device, so there's no number to hijack. Wherever your exchange offers "authenticator app," choose it over text messages.
Set it up on the major exchanges

Crypto-specific habits worth adding
- Whitelist withdrawal addresses if your exchange allows it, so funds can only go to addresses you pre-approved.
- Use a unique, strong password from a password manager — never reused.
- Store backup codes offline, not in the same place as your seed phrase.
- Beware fake "support." No real exchange will ever ask for your 2FA code or seed phrase.
Save your backup codes
Losing your phone with real money behind it is the worst time to be unprepared. Save your backup codes the moment you enable 2FA.
