Discord 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App

discord.com Supported

Multi-factor authentication (Discord's name for 2FA) keeps your Discord account, along with your servers and messages, out of reach even if your password leaks. Discord supports codes from an authenticator app, so you can use Authenticator App - Novaz for them.

A Discord account carries private conversations, so keeping it secure with 2FA matters. Besides an authenticator app, Discord also offers SMS text codes and security keys. An authenticator app (TOTP) is usually the best balance of security and convenience — and it's safer than SMS codes, which can be intercepted through SIM-swap attacks. For the strongest protection, Discord also supports hardware security keys.

2FA methods Discord supports

  • SMS text message
  • Authenticator app (TOTP)
  • Security key (U2F / WebAuthn)

Before you start

  • Your Discord login, including your password (Discord asks for it again during setup)
  • Authenticator App - Novaz installed on your iPhone or iPad
  • Discord open on a computer so you can scan the QR code from that screen
  • A safe place to keep the backup codes Discord gives you at the end

Part 1: Turn on 2FA in Discord

  1. 1

    Click the gear icon

Sign in to Discord and click the small gear icon next to your username in the bottom-left corner. User Settings opens on the "My Account" page.

  2. 2

    Click Enable Authenticator App

Under "Password and Authentication", find the Multi-Factor Authentication options and click "Enable Authenticator App". Discord may ask for your password again to confirm.

  3. 3

Leave the QR code on screen

Discord shows a pop-up with a QR code. Keep it open while you pick up your phone. Any site that asks for Google Authenticator, Discord included, works with Authenticator App - Novaz too. The QR code in the screenshot is a sample, so scan your own.

Part 3: Confirm and finish

  1. 7

Enter the code and click Activate

Go back to Discord in your browser, type the code into the field provided and click "Activate".

  2. 8

    Save your backup codes

Discord then shows your backup codes, and each one works only once. Download them and keep them somewhere safe: if you lose both your phone and these codes, Discord can't help you back in. Discord may also offer to add your phone number as a backup; that's optional and less secure than the codes.

If something goes wrong

  • Discord says the code is invalid: make sure your iPhone's date and time are set automatically (Settings > General > Date & Time), then enter a new code.
  • The code expired before you clicked "Activate": wait for the next one in Authenticator App - Novaz and use that.
  • The QR code won't scan: zoom in on the Discord page, raise your screen brightness, and hold your phone steady.
  • You lost your phone: sign in with one of your Discord backup codes, and remember each code works only once.

How to recover your Discord account

If you lose access to your authenticator and Discord gave you backup or recovery codes when you turned on 2FA, sign in with one of them; keep them somewhere safe, away from your phone. Not every service issues codes. If Discord doesn't, or you didn't save them, use Discord's account-recovery or support process (or ask your admin, for a work account) to get back in.
