JetBrains 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App

jetbrains.com SupportedChecked against official help · September 25, 2026

Your JetBrains Account holds your JetBrains licenses and personal information. JetBrains calls the feature two-factor authentication (2FA) and uses one-time codes from an authenticator app; it suggests apps such as Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator, and Authenticator App - Novaz works the same way.

A JetBrains account can expose source code, deploy keys, and infrastructure — prime targets for attackers. JetBrains secures sign-ins with an authenticator app — set it up once and you're protected on every login.

2FA methods JetBrains supports

  • Authenticator app (TOTP)

Before you start

  • Your JetBrains Account email address and password (the setup dialog asks for the password)
  • Authenticator App - Novaz installed on your iPhone or iPad
  • Your JetBrains Account open on a computer at account.jetbrains.com, so the QR code is on a different screen from your phone
  • A secure place for your recovery codes that only you can access
  • If you use older JetBrains product versions that don't support 2FA, a moment to copy the temporary app password at the end of setup

Part 1: Turn on 2FA in JetBrains

  1. 1

    Open the Password page

Log in to your JetBrains Account. At the top of the page, click "Your account", then select "Password" in the menu on the right.

  2. 2

    Click Enable 2FA

In the "Two-factor authentication" section, click "Enable 2FA". Enter your password in the setup dialog and click "Next". JetBrains shows a QR code; keep the dialog open.

Part 2: Add JetBrains to Authenticator App - Novaz

  1. 3

Scan the QR code in Authenticator App - Novaz

Open Authenticator App - Novaz, tap the + button and scan the QR code in the setup dialog. If it won't scan, choose to enter a setup key and type the key instead. Check the account name, then tap "Save".

  2. 4

    Note the verification code

Authenticator App - Novaz now shows a 6-digit verification code for your JetBrains Account. It changes at short intervals, so have the current one ready.

Part 3: Confirm and finish

  1. 5

Enter the code and click Next

Back in the setup dialog, enter the code in the corresponding field and click "Next". Two-factor authentication is now enabled.

  2. 6

    Save your recovery codes

Click "Copy recovery codes" or "Download as TXT" and store the codes somewhere only you can access.

  3. 7

Copy the app password if you need it

If you only use the latest JetBrains products, close the dialog. For older versions that don't support 2FA, click "Copy app password" and enter it instead of your regular password in the product registration dialog. It's temporary, and you can get a new one in your JetBrains Account at any time.

If something goes wrong

  • JetBrains doesn't accept the code: enter the newest 6-digit code, and make sure your iPhone sets its date and time automatically (Settings > General > Date & Time).
  • You didn't save your recovery codes: go to "Your account" > "Password", click "View recovery codes", enter a one-time password from Authenticator App - Novaz in the "Identification" dialog and click "Next".
  • Someone else may have seen your recovery codes: open the "Recovery codes" dialog and click "Re-Generate Codes"; the old set stops working. JetBrains also suggests changing your password.

How to recover your JetBrains account

JetBrains gives you 8-character recovery codes when you set up 2FA. If you lose your phone, enter your email address and password on the login page, then type one recovery code instead of the one-time code. Each code works once, and "Re-Generate Codes" in the "Recovery codes" dialog creates a new set and invalidates the old one. If you can't find your codes, contact JetBrains: the team can disable 2FA once it confirms the account is yours. Include a copy of a license certificate or invoice from a previous purchase, or your legal ID. With a free educational license, give your academic email address and a student or teacher ID or other proof of your academic position. Once you're back in, turn 2FA on again and save the new recovery codes.

Frequently asked questions

Will JetBrains ask for a code every time I log in?
Yes. Enter your email address and password, click "Log in", then enter the 6-digit code from Authenticator App - Novaz and click "Verify".
Can I use the same authenticator app as for my other accounts?
Yes. JetBrains says one authenticator app can hold multiple accounts, so add your JetBrains Account to Authenticator App - Novaz alongside the others.
What is the app password for?
Older versions of JetBrains products don't support 2FA and never prompt for a code. To log in and activate them, use a temporary app password in the registration dialog instead of your regular password.
Can I see my recovery codes again later?
Yes, as long as you can access your account: go to "Your account" > "Password" > "View recovery codes" and confirm with a one-time password from your authenticator app.
