OpenAI (ChatGPT) 2FA Setup with an Authenticator App
One OpenAI account signs you in to ChatGPT and the API Platform, so it holds your chats, projects and billing. OpenAI calls the feature multi-factor authentication (MFA), and its authenticator app option works with apps such as Google Authenticator and Authy, so Authenticator App - Novaz can supply the one-time codes.
A OpenAI (ChatGPT) account can expose source code, deploy keys, and infrastructure — prime targets for attackers. Besides an authenticator app, OpenAI (ChatGPT) also offers SMS text codes. An authenticator app (TOTP) is usually the best balance of security and convenience — and it's safer than SMS codes, which can be intercepted through SIM-swap attacks.
2FA methods OpenAI (ChatGPT) supports
- Authenticator app (TOTP)
- SMS text message
Before you start
- Your OpenAI login details
- Authenticator App - Novaz installed on your iPhone or iPad
- ChatGPT open on a computer, so the QR code is on a different screen from your phone
- A phone number only if you also want codes by SMS or WhatsApp; the authenticator app doesn't need one
Part 1: Turn on 2FA in OpenAI (ChatGPT)
- 1
Open ChatGPT settings
Sign in to ChatGPT and open "Settings".
- 2
Go to Security and login
Select "Security and login" and find the "Multi-factor authentication (MFA)" section. The methods listed there depend on your device, country, account tier and how the account was created.
- 3
Choose the authenticator app
Pick the authenticator app method. ChatGPT shows a QR code for your app; keep it on screen while you pick up your phone.
Part 2: Add OpenAI (ChatGPT) to Authenticator App - Novaz
- 4
Scan the QR code with Authenticator App - Novaz
Open Authenticator App - Novaz, tap the + button and scan the QR code on your computer. Use "OpenAI" as the account name, then tap "Save".
- 5
Note the one-time code
Authenticator App - Novaz now shows a one-time code for OpenAI. It changes every 30 seconds, so have the current one ready.
Part 3: Confirm and finish
- 6
Enter the code to finish
Back in ChatGPT, enter the current code from Authenticator App - Novaz to finish setting up the authenticator app.
- 7
Add a second method
OpenAI lets you keep several methods, such as a passkey, push notifications, text messages or email. Setting up one of them as well gives you another way in if you lose your phone.
- 8
Save a way to recover your account
If OpenAI (ChatGPT) offers backup or recovery codes, download them or write them down and store them somewhere safe. They are how you get back into your account if you ever lose your phone. If it doesn't, check how OpenAI (ChatGPT) recovers accounts before you need it.
If something goes wrong
- OpenAI says the code is wrong: make sure your iPhone sets its date and time automatically (Settings > General > Date & Time), then enter the newest code.
- You don't see the authenticator app option: OpenAI's MFA methods depend on your device, country, account tier and how the account was created, so the list differs between accounts.
- You lost your phone: at the verification step, choose another method you've set up, such as a passkey, a push notification, a text message or email.
- You run an API organization and want MFA for everyone: you can manage your own MFA from the API Platform too, but OpenAI says admins can't currently enforce MFA.

How to recover your OpenAI (ChatGPT) account
If you lose the phone with Authenticator App - Novaz, sign in and pick another method you've set up at the verification step, such as a passkey, a push notification, a text message or email. Then remove the old authenticator app under "Security and login" and set it up again on your new phone. OpenAI's help doesn't describe backup codes for regular accounts. If you've turned on Advanced Account Security, you save recovery keys when you turn it on instead; each key works once, and that mode switches off SMS and email recovery. OpenAI warns that losing every method and every recovery key can mean losing the account, so keep a second method set up.
Frequently asked questions
- Which MFA methods does OpenAI offer?
- Authenticator apps (OpenAI names Google Authenticator and Authy), push notifications, codes by SMS or WhatsApp, and passkeys. What you see depends on your device, country, account tier and how the account was created. Authenticator App - Novaz works as the authenticator app.
- Can I manage MFA from the API Platform?
- Yes. OpenAI's help says you can manage MFA from the API Platform as well as from ChatGPT's settings.
- Can an admin make MFA mandatory for a team?
- Not at the moment. OpenAI says admins can't currently enforce MFA, so each person turns it on for their own account.
- What is Advanced Account Security?
- An optional, stricter mode. You save recovery keys when you turn it on, each key works once, and SMS and email recovery are switched off. Keep the keys somewhere safe, because losing every method and every key can lock you out for good.
