Unity 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App

unity.com SupportedChecked against official help · September 25, 2026

Your Unity ID signs you in to Unity Cloud, the Asset Store and your Unity organizations, so it deserves more than a password. Unity calls the feature two-factor authentication (TFA or 2FA), and since September 1, 2026 it can only be set up with an authenticator app such as Authenticator App - Novaz.

A Unity account can expose source code, deploy keys, and infrastructure — prime targets for attackers. Unity secures sign-ins with an authenticator app — set it up once and you're protected on every login.

2FA methods Unity supports

  • Authenticator app (TOTP)

Before you start

  • Your Unity ID email address and password (Unity may ask for the password again during setup)
  • Authenticator App - Novaz installed on your iPhone or iPad
  • Unity ID (id.unity.com) or Unity Cloud open on a computer, so the QR code is on a different screen from your phone
  • Somewhere safe to keep the recovery codes Unity gives you at the end of setup

Part 1: Turn on 2FA in Unity

  1. 1

    Open your Unity ID account

Sign in to your Unity ID. If you signed in to Unity Cloud instead, click "Account" to reach your Unity ID settings.

  2. 2

    Go to Security

Select "Security" on the left of the screen, then click "Configure two factor authentication".

  3. 3

    Click Start setup

Click the "Start setup" button. Enter your Unity ID password again if you're prompted.

  4. 4

    Choose Authenticator App

Select "Authenticator App" and click "Next". Unity shows a QR code for your account; leave it on screen.

Part 2: Add Unity to Authenticator App - Novaz

  1. 5

Scan the QR code with Authenticator App - Novaz

Open Authenticator App - Novaz, tap the + button and point your camera at the QR code on the Unity page. If it won't scan, zoom in on the page or raise your screen brightness and try again.

  2. 6

Save the account and note the code

Check the account name and secret key the app filled in and tap "Save". Authenticator App - Novaz now shows a code for Unity that refreshes regularly, so have it ready.

Part 3: Confirm and finish

  1. 7

Enter the code and click Verify

Back on Unity, type the code from Authenticator App - Novaz into the text field and click "Verify".

  2. 8

    Download your recovery codes

Unity now shows your recovery codes. Click "Download" to save them as a text file or "Copy" to paste them somewhere safe, then click "Done". Two-factor authentication is now on.

If something goes wrong

  • Unity says the code is wrong: make sure your iPhone sets its date and time automatically (Settings > General > Date & Time), then enter the newest code.
  • Your codes used to arrive by text and have stopped: SMS is no longer supported for new accounts and some existing ones. If you can still sign in, for example on a remembered device, remove two-factor authentication and set it up again with Authenticator App - Novaz.
  • Your recovery codes are used up or may have been seen: go to Security, select "Recovery Codes" (the eye icon) and click "Generate new recovery codes". The old codes expire.

How to recover your Unity account

Keep the recovery codes from setup somewhere safe, away from your phone. You can see them again under Security by selecting "Recovery Codes" (the eye icon), and "Generate new recovery codes" gives you a fresh set, which cancels the old ones. If you've lost your phone and have no codes left, you can't remove two-factor authentication yourself: contact Unity's Customer Experience team with your Unity organization name and your Unity username (not your email address). If you can't provide those, Unity accepts alternatives such as an Asset Store order number or the phone number on your Unity ID.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still use text messages for Unity two-factor authentication?
Not for new setups. Since September 1, 2026, Unity only lets you set up two-factor authentication with an authenticator app, and SMS is no longer supported for some existing accounts either.
Will Unity ask for a code every time I sign in?
Yes. Since April 2026, Unity requires a code at every login, with stronger checks on new devices and networks. Choosing "Remember this device for 30 days" cuts down the prompts on devices you trust.
How do I move my Unity codes to a new phone?
While you can still sign in and get a code, go to Security, click "Edit" (the pencil icon) next to the Two-Factor Authentication header and press "Disable All" or "Remove" (the x icon). Enter a code from Authenticator App - Novaz, click "Remove" in the pop-up, then set it up again on the new phone.
Does this protect my Unity Ads payout profile?
No. For two-factor authentication on a Unity Ads Tipalti profile, contact Unity Ads Support.
