How to use 2FA while travelling abroad
Travelling is the moment 2FA either quietly works or suddenly strands you. Swap your SIM for a local one, step off a long flight, or lose signal in a hotel, and SMS codes can stop arriving right when you need to log in. A little prep keeps everything smooth.
Why authenticator apps are the traveller's friend
An authenticator app generates TOTP codes on your device, offline. No signal, no SIM, no roaming — the codes keep coming. That alone solves the biggest travel headache. Before you leave, move any important account that still uses SMS onto an app.
Your pre-trip checklist
- Switch critical accounts to app-based 2FA — especially email, banking, and crypto.
- Save your backup codes and carry them separately from your phone (a printed copy in your bag, or your password manager).
- Consider a second device with your accounts added, kept in your luggage as a spare.
- Set your phone clock to automatic so a new time zone doesn't cause invalid-code errors.
If you swap to a local SIM
Your old number may go quiet — which breaks SMS 2FA but not an authenticator app. This is exactly why app-based codes matter abroad: they don't depend on your phone number at all, so they're also immune to SIM-swap problems.
