How to move your 2FA codes to a new iPhone
Switching phones is the moment people get locked out of accounts. Do this before you wipe or trade in the old device, and the move takes a minute.
Before you switch
- On the old iPhone, open Authenticator App and confirm iCloud backup is on and up to date.
- If you'd rather keep a copy yourself, export your accounts as well.
- Don't erase the old phone until the new one is restored and generating correct codes.
On the new iPhone
- Install Authenticator App from the App Store and open it.
- Sign in to the same iCloud account you used for the backup.
- Restore from the iCloud backup in the app's settings.
- Open a couple of accounts and check a code works before wiping the old device.
FAQ
- I already wiped my old phone and had no backup. What now?
- Use each service's backup or recovery codes to sign in, then turn 2FA on again and re-add the account. If you have no recovery codes, contact that service's support to recover the account.
- Can I keep both phones working at once?
- Yes. The same accounts can generate codes on more than one of your devices, which is handy while you migrate.
Keep your 2FA codes in one secure place
Authenticator App - Novaz generates your codes offline, backs them up encrypted to your own iCloud, and locks behind Face ID — free and ad-free.
