Squarespace 2FA: How to Set Up an Authenticator App

Your Squarespace account gives access to your sites and everything you manage on them. Squarespace calls the feature two-factor authentication (2FA) and offers an authentication app as one of its methods; it recommends Google Authenticator but accepts any authentication app for iOS, including Authenticator App - Novaz.

Losing a Squarespace account can take your sites or servers offline, so lock it down with 2FA. Besides an authenticator app, Squarespace also offers SMS text codes. An authenticator app (TOTP) is usually the best balance of security and convenience — and it's safer than SMS codes, which can be intercepted through SIM-swap attacks.

Before you start

  • Your Squarespace email address and password: Squarespace asks you to log in again when you set up a 2FA method
  • Authenticator App - Novaz installed on your iPhone or iPad
  • Your Squarespace account settings open on a computer, so the QR code is on a different screen from your phone
  • A safe place for your backup login codes, which appear only once
  • If you already use a passkey or text messages for 2FA, a choice of which to keep: Squarespace suggests enabling only one method

Part 1: Turn on 2FA in Squarespace

    Open the Two-factor authentication panel

    Log in to Squarespace and open the "Two-factor authentication" panel in your account settings (account.squarespace.com/settings/security/two-factor).

    Click Set Up next to Authentication App

    Next to "Authentication App", click "Set Up" and follow the prompts to log in again. A QR code appears.

Part 2: Add Squarespace to Authenticator App - Novaz

    Add Squarespace in Authenticator App - Novaz

    Open Authenticator App - Novaz, tap the + button and scan the QR code. If it won't scan, click "Can't Scan QR Code" on Squarespace and copy the key, then choose to enter a setup key in the app, using your Squarespace email as the account name. Tap "Save".

    Note the 6-digit code

    Authenticator App - Novaz now shows a six-digit code for Squarespace. It changes every 30 seconds, so have it ready.

Part 3: Confirm and finish

    Click Next and confirm the code

    Back on Squarespace, click "Next". Enter the code from Authenticator App - Novaz, then click "Confirm".

    Save your backup login codes

    Squarespace now shows your backup login codes, only this once. Click "Download codes" to save them as a .txt file, then print it or store it somewhere secure.

    Know when Squarespace will ask for a code

    You'll enter a code from Authenticator App - Novaz every time you log in, unless you select "Remember this computer for 30 days". Squarespace also asks you to reauthenticate before sensitive changes, such as a new password.

If something goes wrong

  • Squarespace says "Code is incorrect": the code was mistyped or has expired. Enter the newest code and make sure your iPhone sets its time automatically (Settings > General > Date & Time). If it still fails during setup, contact Squarespace.
  • You can't log in to the Squarespace mobile app after turning on 2FA: update the app. If you log out of it, you'll need a code to log back in.
  • You got a new phone: temporarily turn off 2FA, then click "Set Up" beside "Authentication App" and scan the new QR code with Authenticator App - Novaz on the new phone.
  • A backup code doesn't work: type it instead of pasting it, or try a different code, because each works only once.

How to recover your Squarespace account

Squarespace gives you backup login codes in sets of eight, each usable once. If you lose your phone, go to squarespace.com/login, enter your email and password and click "Log In", then click "Use a different method" and "Backup code", enter an unused code and click "Log in". To replace used or lost codes, open the "Two-factor authentication" panel and click "Generate new codes" next to Backup codes; the old ones stop working. If you're still logged in on another device, you can temporarily turn off 2FA there instead. Without backup codes or a logged-in device, contact Squarespace through its Help Center.

Frequently asked questions

Which two-factor methods does Squarespace offer?
A passkey, an authentication app such as Authenticator App - Novaz, or text messages, available only in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK and the US. Squarespace recommends enabling just one, since more don't make the account more secure.
Can I require 2FA for my site's contributors?
No. Contributors can turn on 2FA for their own accounts, but there isn't a way to enable it for them.
How do I log in to apps that don't support 2FA?
Use an app password, for example for the Developer Platform. In the Security panel, click "App Passwords", then "Generate Password", add a label and your account password, and copy the app password before clicking "Done".
How do I turn off 2FA?
In the "Two-factor authentication" panel, click "Turn off" next to Authentication App, log in and click "Turn off" again. Your backup codes stop working, and you'll get new ones if you turn 2FA on later.
