Is an authenticator app safe? What the risks really are

Short answer: yes — an authenticator app is one of the safest and cheapest security upgrades available. But "safe" deserves detail, because the honest picture includes a few things it does not protect you from.

What it protects you from

• Stolen or leaked passwords. The password alone stops being enough.
• Credential stuffing. Reused passwords from a breach won't open the door.
• SIM-swap attacks. Nothing is sent over the phone network at all — unlike SMS codes.
• Snooping on public Wi-Fi. Codes are generated locally, not transmitted.

What it does not protect you from

Being straight about this matters:

• Real-time phishing. If a convincing fake site asks for your password and your current code, and you type both, an attacker can relay them within the 30-second window. This is the big one — see how phishing works. Hardware security keys resist this; TOTP doesn't.
• Malware on an unlocked device. If something has full run of your phone, it may reach your codes. An App Lock and a device passcode raise the bar.
• Losing your only device. Not a security failure, but the most common way people actually lose access — which is why backup and recovery codes matter.

Where the secrets live

In a well-built app, the secret keys are stored encrypted on your device, with no account to sign into and nothing sent to the developer. That's how ours works — the details. It also means nobody can hand your codes over, including us.

How to close the gaps

1. Turn on the app's own lock, and use a strong device passcode.
2. Never type a code into a page you reached from a link in an email — open the site yourself.
3. Save each service's recovery codes somewhere separate from your phone.
